American Horror Story

There are a few good shows on TV, a lot that don't vary far from the pablum that permeates the airwaves, and then an almost equal amount that are pure crap.

The horror genre though has been woefully underrepresented and the good ones don't seem to last. However, occasionally, a dark and bloody jewel pops up.

That's the case with American Horror Story, which airs on FX on Wednesday nights.

I was captivated by the previews and have been watching it from the beginning but it just keeps getting better and creepier. What it doesn't do is get any easier to understand.

AHS is the epitome of the Psychological Thriller / Horror genre. Many, many people won't get and even less will like it because it affects one so deep inside the psyche that it is uncomfortable at times. I was surprised to read that it had been granted a second season because it does deviate so far from the normal television fodder.

I realize that I've said a lot about the show but haven't given any details. That's because I'm not big on reviews that have spoilers and this show is almost impossible to describe since it is so character driven and it's impossible to fully describe the characters without giving anything away.

Suffice to say that the main character is the house, the haunted house, but the other characters (including Jessica Lange in a phenomenal role) make this show.

See it, with the lights off and your mind open. It's worth the scare.
